About My practice

Within my practice, I strive to capture the intricate relationships between the microscopic nature of human identity and the manufactured nature of human identity. As an artist navigating the intricacies of life with Type 1 Diabetes, my work reflects the complexity of both the internal and external factors that shape identity. Through abstract forms and mixed media—ink, acrylic, and sometimes unconventional materials—I explore the microbial and cellular landscapes that both define and disrupt our personal experiences. Type one diabetes requires constant management involving both biology and technology, and myself, balancing insulin, blood sugar levels and bodily function, which is not always visible to the outside world. The microscopic shifts within our bodies are constantly changing; within my health, this is unpredictable and ever-evolving; however, it goes unnoticed. My practice's experimental tone reflects and mimics these qualities. The ink and acrylic inks allow me to produce fluid and dynamic compositions that mirror my body's microbiomes and biological systems. Microbes are the invisible agents of change shaping our identities; they aren't fixed and morphed by both internal and external elements, as conveyed within my practice through shape and form being fluid, never being fixed due to using water as my agent. This abstract exploration of scientific material with an artistic lens symbolises the complexity of living with Type 1 Diabetes and the microbes that silently influence my body, mind, and sense of self.
